In years past site contamination was a result of such practices as inappropriate disposal of materials, underground storage of fuel and lubricants in tanks that had deteriorated, and buildings containing asbestos.
A database of all of our contaminated sites records the status of all the remediation works carried out. A risk assessment categorises sites into “Low”, “Medium” and “High” priority. This provides the basis for planning work programs.
Sites still used by the business and which were identified as having contamination have been remediated. Over the years, contaminated sites that were to be sold were cleaned up prior to sale.
Hydro Tasmania has processes embedded for us to manage oils, other chemicals and wastes that help us prevent land contamination. If any contamination does accidentally occur, we also have an incident response procedure that will ensure remediation.
